Where do you work and what is your job title?
Gainwell Technologies as the Account Privacy Officer.

How long have you been a member of ArHIMA?
Since I was a student in the HIM program in 1994.

What certification types have you received or are seeking to receive?
I have a RHIA and the old CHP (Certified in Healthcare Privacy).

Which college/university did you attend?
Arkansas Tech University.

What made you decide to pursue a career in HIM?
There are four events that lead me down the path to HIM.

  1. When I was in the 9th/10th grade we lived in Danville, Pennsylvania home of Geisinger Medical Center and I was a candy striper (pink and white jumper skirt and all). I loved being a part of a large organization that helped people.
  2. My senior year in high school we were allowed to miss school one day and shadow a profession that we thought we wanted to pursue. I choose Physical Therapy and enjoyed the experience UNTIL late in the day a patient came in with an external fixation device to his head! I got faint and clammy and almost passed out.
  3. The mother of one of my best friends in high school was Sue Tolbert, ART who happened to be the Director of Medical Records at St Mary’s hospital in Rogers. She encouraged both of us to get our degrees in HIM.Another best friend and I attended a college day visit at Arkansas Tech and one of the booths was for HIM. I can’t remember who was working the booth that day, but the way they described the HIM profession I thought “that sounds like me”.  So, building on all these influences, I decided to pursue HIM and stick to the paperwork side of healthcare.

What other jobs and/or titles have you held prior to the present one?
Coder, insurance adjustor, director of medical records, HIPAA compliance officer, outreach specialist for meaningful use. Plus, currently on top of my HIPAA responsibilities I also do inspections of care and COVID case investigation auditing.

What are some of your responsibilities at your current position?
Gainwell Technologies supports state Medicaid agencies. As part of the compliance team, I’ll be supporting general oversight of the HIPAA privacy program and state privacy laws for state Medicaid agencies. My work will cover the implementation of account-specific privacy programs to include policy review, training and incident review activities. In addition, I’ll be working with the legal and HIPAA security team to provide HIPAA privacy guidance to the Gainwell Technologies employees.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
HIPAA. It’s my favorite HIM function. I find the details of the COVID cases interesting and of course, I enjoy working at home!!

Any other professional tidbit(s) you want to include?
ArHIMA has been a wonderful place for me to develop lifetime friendships and use my talents. ArHIMA Legal Manual updates are in the works.
