I am currently the Health Information Technology Program Director for the University of Arkansas – Pulaski Technical College campus.

How long have you been a member of ArHIMA?
I have been a member of AHIMA and ArHIMA for a little over twelve years. I joined our professional organization January 7th, 2010, as a student and have continued as a professional member.

What certification types have you received or are seeking to receive?
I currently hold my Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential. If I ever get some downtime to study, I hope to take the Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) credentialing exam.

Which college/university did you attend?
I attended the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for both my associate and bachelor’s degree. I later attended Arkansas Tech University for my master’s degree in Health Informatics.

What made you decide to pursue a career in HIM?
Like many of the other HIM professionals I have connected with, I stumbled on the HIM profession. I was originally a speech pathology major and decided direct patient care was not for me. I started looking for other healthcare careers and found HIM. Once I read about the profession, I knew it was for me and I haven’t looked back since.

What other jobs and/or titles have you held prior to the present one?
I have been fortunate to have held many different roles in HIM. Some of these roles include systems analyst, HIM supervisor, HIM business manager, HIM technician, and even consultant.

What is your favorite food?
This is a tough question for me since I really enjoy all different types of food. If I had to pick, I’d go with Mexican food. I don’t think I could turn down a good Mexican restaurant.

What was the first concert you ever attended?
The very first concert I can remember attending, way back ago, was Hootie and the Blowfish at Riverfest. Growing up in Central Arkansas, we went to Riverfest every year. The first concert I ever attended that I remember forcing my parents to take me to was the NSYNC’s Pop Odyssey tour in 2001.

What’s something you want to do that you’ve never done before?
One thing that I have always wanted to do, but just haven’t been able to get planned and booked is traveling to Florida’s Crystal River to snorkel with the manatees.

Do you like to cook? If so, what is your favorite thing to cook?
I do enjoy cooking, but I keep things simple. We stay busy in my household, so cooking is something I like to keep quick and easy. Most of my favorite things to cook are done in my InstaPot or require only 3 or 4 ingredients from Trader Joe’s.

If you could get on a plane tonight and travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
This is an easy one to answer. I’d be headed to the Galapagos Islands to visit the turtles, marine wildlife, and the beautiful water turquoise waters. This is my dream vacation on my bucket list, and I hope to get to visit one day.
